General Description:
The Pre-kindergarten Aftercare Counselor is responsible for preparing and supervising young children in activities in the afterschool program. Responsibilities include responding to the needs of young children, providing opportunities for rest, nourishment and play. Plan and oversee developmentally appropriate activities ensuring the wellness of all children in your care, maintaining relationships with parents, and providing help to program coordinator or other counselors. Work hours are from 2:20p.m or 3:20p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday on regular school days for students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise students and ensure student safety and well-being at all times
- Greet and engage every child, every day
- Conduct appropriate record keeping and documentation such as daily attendance, meal counts, parent communication logs, etc.
- Plan and prepare appropriate activities for children to engage in and ensure safe play
- Interact with students in a manner which is appropriate to their developmental level, being fair, consistent and professional at all times
- Ensure students are provided with snacks and meals
- Provide space and opportunities for children to rest as needed and to engage in quiet activities
- Escort children to the restroom, assist with toileting and hand washing routines as necessary
- Report all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately
- Ensure safe student dismissal procedures are followed
- Clean up and sanitize the aftercare space at the end of each day leaving it in condition for use during regular school functions the following day
- Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal, aftercare coordinator, or designee
Qualifications:
- Experience working with young children in a childcare or school setting preferred
- High school diploma or GED required, associate degree preferred
- Attentiveness to the needs and safety of young children
- Caring and compassionate attitude when interacting with and caring for young children
- CPR/AED Certification appropriate to age group highly desirable
- First Aid Certification highly desirable
