General Description:

The Senior Accountant performs complex accounting functions to facilitate the overall efficiency of the Finance Department in the areas of payroll and general ledger, ensuring compliance with mandated requirements, and maintaining confidential employee records.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares, analyzes and reconciles various payroll and general ledger reports
  • Prepares balance sheet reconciliations and corrects journal voucher entries
  • Prepares and reviews payroll adjustments for employee and employer retirement contributions
  • Assists with the year-end audit
  • Processes regular and supplemental semimonthly payroll
  • Monitors, maintains, and resolves unverified absence and/or erroneous substitute data
  • Processes court orders for tax liens, garnishments, child support,
  • Prepares and reviews short-term disability payroll adjustments
  • Prepares tax returns, researches and resolves tax related matters with designated tax agencies
  • Acts as the primary contact with Risk Management team on all workers compensation matters and provides the final review of all processing and calculation
  • Generates and performs final review of processing queries
  • Writes, updates, and maintains a comprehensive policy and procedures manual for assigned tasks
  • Reviews and submits semi-monthly contribution files, processes funding, audits set-ups, reconciles and resolves discrepancies, etc. for RPS VRS retirement accounts
  • Performs related work as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field required
  • At least five years of progressive experience in government or general accounting required
  • Extensive knowledge of payroll functions including preparation, regulations, FLSA guidelines, balancing, payroll taxes, internal controls
  • Experience in analyzing, interpreting, and preparing fiscal/accounting records and reconciling general ledger accounts
  • Ability to interpret payroll and benefits policies and procedures
  • Experience with the Virginia Retirement Systems preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate complex ideas simply and succinctly
  • Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills; ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills, including keen attention to detail and ease at managing competing demands and determining priorities independently
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment, adaptable when managing multiple, shifting priorities; comfortable with ambiguity
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, Google applications, and other business solutions software
  • Bilingual/fluency in Spanish preferred
