General Description:
Responsible for providing instructional leadership, managing and leading the staff and overseeing the preschool center facility and budget. Responsible for providing for the overall well-being of the preschool students. Ensures that every student makes academic progress, achieves established goals for kindergarten readiness and provides a safe and nurturing school environment. Monitors and supports instructional activities, participates in and provides staff development, has knowledge of PreK curriculum and standards, and evaluates the instructional practices of early childhood teachers. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and motivates all personnel assigned to the preschool center and additional PreK classrooms located in elementary schools.
  • Provides educational and instructional leadership in a cooperative and collaborative manner, which interprets, initiates and implements the vision, mission, goals and objectives of Richmond Public Schools.
  • Provides oversight for and actively participates in recruitment and enrollment efforts of the school.
  • Conducts meetings of staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the preschool program.
  • Performs administrative duties including budget development and management, state and division reporting, personnel selection, training, evaluation, development and maintenance of efficient business procedures.
  • Supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, student and staff handbooks and all other documentation appropriate to the preschool center's administration.
  • Actively engages parents and the community in the life of the preschool center in support of children’s learning and attainment of school goals.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with local community and business groups to foster understanding and solicit support for overall preschool objectives and programs.
  • Assumes leadership in the management of the preschool's extracurricular activities; attends such activities and ensures the maintenance of a safe and secure environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Postgraduate professional license and the appropriate level endorsement as a school principal
  • Must have at least three years of successful leadership and management experience as a principal, assistant principal, teacher specialist, administrator and/or supervisor at the elementary or preschool level
  • Demonstrated instructional leadership skills and knowledge of how to effectively develop and implement early childhood curriculum; how to evaluate, motivate and develop early childhood staff; and how to provide preschool students with an effective learning environment
  • Deep understanding of early literacy and standards for kindergarten readiness
  • Considerable knowledge of how to effectively integrate the skills and processes required by the Virginia Foundation Blocks for Early Learning into the curriculum
  • Working knowledge of and experience with site-based management, Early Childhood Education, Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI), Head Start and Early Childhood Exceptional Education program requirements
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, school staff, parents, community and business representatives and central office staff
  • CLASS observer certification preferred
  • Bilingual skills to include Spanish preferred


GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: Performs executive level leadership, management and program supervision at an elementary level school. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, light lifting up to 10 pounds, walking, vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
