POSITION TITLE: Interpreter/Translator - Deaf and Hard of Hearing

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful completion of Virginia Quality Assurance Screenings (VQAS) Level III, any Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Certificate (excluding Certificate of Deaf Interpretation) or any other state or national certification recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as equivalent to or exceeding the VQAS Level III. Minimum qualification to work with children using cued speech of cued language must have VQAS Level or hold a Transliteration Skills Certificate from the Testing, Evaluation and Certification Unit (TEC Unit). Documentation is required. Must have the ability to work independently and effectively without direct supervision. Must have comprehensive knowledge of working with school staff and parents and have an understanding of the knowledge, skills and processes involved in providing comprehensive services to students. Necessary Special Requirements: Must have a valid Virginia driver's license and a personal vehicle for work transportation.

 

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: Facilitates communication for assigned student(s) who are deaf; hard of hearing or deaf/blind so that they can participate in the educational setting and access the general education curriculum. Work with individual students who are deaf, hard of hearing or deaf/blind translating spoken and written information into sign language. Provides interpreting services for educational meetings, athletic events, extra curricula activities and graduation as assigned. Provides tutorial services for assigned students when necessary. Work closely with Exceptional and General Education teachers, case managers, and other interpreters to ensure a good environment and sound curriculum experiences and activities. Attends staff meetings, professional development trainings and parent-teacher conferences as scheduled. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: Duties performed typically in a school setting. Performs professional work providing specialized services to deaf and hard of hearing students. Work requires frequent standing, lifting up to 15 pounds, sitting, walking, vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.

 

REPORTS TO: Principal and Director of Exceptional Education

 

PAY SCHEDULE: Teacher Salary Schedule

 

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 200 Days (9.5 months)
