General Description:

 

The Staff Accountant will perform accounting functions in the area of banking activities, analyzing revenue, accounts receivable management, and general accounting.  The Staff Accountant will also provide financial information to management by researching and analyzing accounting data and preparing reports and will substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains Student Activity Fund (SAF) Accounts
  • Oversees the monthly preparation and timely submission of Student Activity Financial Reporting for over 40 schools
  • Works with and advises finance officers through the reconciliation process
  • Verifies validity and accuracy of Student Activity Financial Reports in accordance with established regulations
  • Follows up with Finance Officers when corrective actions are required.
  • Provides training and technical assistance to Finance Officers and Principals including written job aids and FAQs
  • Maintains, distributes, and replenishes petty cash for the school district
  • Performs balance sheet reconciliations
  • Prepares work papers and other analyses to support year-end revenue and receivables, records accruals in support of the audit requirements
  • Creates invoices, collects and maintains reports for building rentals
  • Handles the unclaimed property research, performs due diligence, and files with the state
  • Posts journal entries and maintain journal entry files
  • Captures and tracks capital project expenditures
  • Writes, updates, and maintains comprehensive policy and procedures manual for SAF and other assigned tasks
  • Contributes to finance team effort by performing other duties, and tasks, and participates in special management/financial programs, as assigned
  • Provides assistance to auditors as required

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field and at least three (3) years of increasingly responsible and progressive experience in government or general accounting required
  • Good working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and practices required
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and in a cooperative and collaborative manner with all employees, school administration, business, and community representatives
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet multiple deadlines
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the internet
