General Description:
The Cosmetology role prepares students with hands-on learning activities and meaningful instruction. Students are assisted with developing competencies that allow them to successfully enter a post-secondary school to further their skills and training or entry to the job market. This position involves coordinating programs and educating students in preparation to take the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology licensing examination. Students receive comprehensive training and skills necessary for their future roles as Cosmetologists, contributing directly to the development of competent Cosmetology professionals.
Upon successful completion of the program, students may earn the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology license.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Employs a wide variety of teaching methods designed to create opportunities for deep understanding and differentiated instruction for all levels of ability within a class
- Develops lesson plans, organizes teaching materials, creates assessments, and delivers instruction aligned with the course curriculum
- Coordinates all aspects of the training lab and managing program logistics
- Applies instructional strategies to teach how to perform spa manicures and pedicures, apply and maintain artificial and gel nails, and apply concepts associated with nail disorders and physiology while adhering to safety guidelines
- Works cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP)
- Collaborates with school administration and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with program requirements and regulations
- Maintains accurate records of student attendance, skills, and performance in accordance with state-approved competency evaluation programs
- Maintains current and comprehensive curricula, utilizing appropriate methods to assess student performance in the classroom and laboratory, ensuring alignment with state standards and industry best practices
- Prepares a syllabus for each assigned course which meets VDOE content requirements
- Ensures students acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully obtain state certification and effectively prepare for employment as a Barber or Cosmetologist
- Serves as an advisor for SkillsUSA, student-led organization
- Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by attending workshops, lectures, and institutes on specific subjects to enhance job performance
- Maintains confidentiality of work-related information and materials
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia professional teaching license with an endorsement in Trade and Industry - Cosmetology
- Currently hold a Virginia Cosmetology license
- Minimum of two (2) years of industry experience as a licensed Cosmetologist
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: Duties performed typically in a school setting. Performs professional work providing teaching and/or training services to students in a specialized subject. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking and light lifting up to 30 pounds. Travels to school and student conferences. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
