General Description:
The Network Engineer performs skilled network analysis and repair, development and maintenance work, and various network support tasks in an office environment; and does related work as required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond to network outages and trouble calls at our 55 Richmond Public Schools buildings throughout the City of Richmond
- Works with school staff to assess, diagnose, mitigate, and resolve connectivity issues within the building LAN by reviewing network documentation, observing reported symptoms, and tracing physical connections
- During the troubleshooting process, one must be prepared to temporarily rewire the network infrastructure, physically replace bad equipment, and open support calls with specific manufacturers and vendors
- Installs, configures documents, maintains, upgrades, and troubleshoots network switches and routers and other network devices
- Maintains network documentation, including updating Visio network diagrams, logging network changes, and tracking inventory of network equipment and IP addresses
- Provides specifications for the generation of quotes by vendors on network wiring and equipment installation
- Maintains communications with wiring and integration vendors to ensure work is completed as designated
- Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by keeping current with the literature and new research findings
- Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing related tasks as needed or assigned
Qualifications:
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification or higher required
- Certifications in other networking technologies, including switching and routing, network security, physical wiring, and network design are preferred
- Must possess excellent customer service, organizational, and planning skills along with excellent communications and public relations skills
- Must have at least two years of experience installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Cisco switches, routers, firewalls, and other LAN / WAN equipment
- Must have at least two years of experience installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Aruba WAP’s
- Experience with Cisco ISE is a plus
- Must have a working knowledge of network diagnostic testers and some experience with Fluke OneTouch is preferred
- Must have familiarity with CAT 5E and CAT6 wiring standards and previous network wiring experience
- Knowledge of wireless network design and concepts is required
- Must have the ability to provide part specifications for the generation of quotes for network wiring installation
- Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Visio and the ability to learn other similar applications used for network documentation
- Must be willing to travel locally with a personal vehicle
- Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision and effectively manage multiple priorities
- Must have the ability to work efficiently under pressure to resolve network outages whenever they occur
- Must be available to work after normal work hours and on weekends as required to perform network maintenance
- Must be able to communicate efficiently in technical or simple terms as appropriate to end users, staff, and management
- Must have the personality and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, employees, and other customers
- Must be adaptable to changing priorities and able to handle multiple assignments within deadlines simultaneously
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move network equipment exceeding 50 lbs
- Must be able to sit, stoop, kneel, reach, pull, and perform repetitive motions as part of regular job duties
- Visual acuity is required for tasks such as preparing and analyzing data, operating machines, and ensuring the accuracy and thoroughness of work
