JOB DESCRIPTION: Early Intervention Assistants will be trained to assist in the Richmond Public Schools early intervention eligibility screening process in grades K-2. Early Intervention Assistants will receive required professional development and training prior to conducting academic interventions and screening using research based methodology in reading and/or
math in grades K-2.
QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s degree or completion of 60 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university recognized by the Virginia Department of Education or demonstrated knowledge of and the ability to assist in reading, writing, and mathematics instruction by achieving a passing score on the ParaPro Assessment. A minimum of one year working experience as an instructional assistant preferred. Excellent communication, organizational, time management, and public relations skills are required. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Must have good skills in operating personal computers and related software. Must be adaptable to changing priorities, have the ability to work independently and/or with minimum supervision, and the ability to effectively handle multiple assignments simultaneously. Must have good knowledge of and understanding of child growth and development and paraprofessional instructional procedures and practices. Must have some knowledge of the instructional goals and the policies of public schools. Considerable patience and the ability to work effectively with children and faculty members are essential. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions and to perform all required tasks.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

- Provides small group instruction.
- Communicates with school personnel and parents of children regarding reading and/or math level and rate of progress.
- Differentiates instruction based on assessment data.
- Upon request and availability; participates in team reviews concerning academic progress for students receiving services.
- Shares student data with applicable teachers and administration.
- Provides pre and post-assessment data to teachers and administrators.
- Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community.
- Maintains accurate records and documentation.
- Follows required procedures and practices outlined in training.
- Attends all required training.
- Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
- Administers informal and formal assessments outlined in program.
- Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional program objectives.
- Manages classroom organization.
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: Duties performed typically in a school setting. Performs professional work providing teaching and/or training services to students. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, light lifting up to 10 pounds, walking, vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 191 Days (9.5 months) – 7 hour work day
