PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
- Performs mechanical functions required to ensure efficient operation of air conditioning, refrigeration and/or heating plant systems.
- Installs services and repairs all types of air conditioning, refrigeration and heating systems including all temperature, pressure, combustion and safety control systems.
- Performs overhauls on or repairs reciprocating, centrifugal, and absorption-type air conditioning and refrigeration chillers and compressors.
- Performs overhauls on or repairs gas and oil burners, boilers, hot air furnaces, and control systems.
- Adjusts and balances air, steam and hot water controls for maximum efficiency on heating and air conditioning systems.
- Performs major repairs to all types HVAC units to include valves, piping, fans, fan shafts, bearings, sheaves, belts and guards; and repairs or replaces steam, hot water, chill water and air conditioning DX coils.
- Performs major repairs to all sizes and types of pumps including chill water, condenser, hot water, condensate/vacuum, and air/oil pumps.
- Operates shop equipment, machinery, and testing equipment for troubleshooting heating and air conditioning systems.
- Installs, rolls and beads all types of boiler condenser tubes and performs work with torches, welding equipment, electrical hand tools and electrical equipment.
- Troubleshoots and assists in the field repairs of energy management systems in emergencies.
- Services and repairs cooling towers, fans, and air-cooled condensers as needed to ensure efficient operation.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a high school diploma or its equivalency.
- A journeyman mechanical license is preferred.
- Must obtain journeyman mechanical license within one year of probation period.
- Four years of experience at journeyman level in the installation, servicing and repair of air conditioning, refrigeration and/or heating plants preferred.
- Three years of experience in the commercial HVAC repair required.
- Some experience with energy management systems to include Honeywell, Siemens, Johnson Controls and some computer skills to include IPad, LCDs on frequency drives, boilers chillers and rooftop units.
- Must hold the appropriate mechanical license and the universal certification for refrigerant transition and recovery.
- Must have the ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, and sketches and have knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
- Must have the ability to analyze and correct HVAC equipment malfunctions.
- Must have a working knowledge of pneumatic controls.
- Must have the ability to work in a cooperative manner with co-workers, supervisors, managers and school/department administration and staff.
- Must have excellent knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices and tools used in the trade.
- Must have sufficient strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks of lifting, stooping, bending, and carrying HVAC equipment and materials to and from work sites.
- Must be able to work outdoors in all different types of weather conditions and service HVAC equipment in confined spaces.
- Must hold a valid Virginia Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Applicant may be required to demonstrate the required skill level through a hands-on performance test.
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Performs skilled HVAC trade work and related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Work requires lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs. frequently and 50-100 lbs. occasionally for short distances or with the aid of load bearing equipment. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, and observing general surroundings and activities. Work requires exposure to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a respirator. May be exposed to hazards airborne materials and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
